Sorry for this late post. I had planned to post this on Monday but I got waylaid during the week. My older son has a mandarin test next week and it is his very first. He is in Primary 2 and for mandarin, I used to outsource it to a tuition teacher but she couldn't continue this year and so that's where I have had to step in.
I don't do a lot but I have had to sit by his side and play the dictionary when he comes across words that he doesn't recall. So I try to be chirpy and encouraging as he revises his lessons. I have also tried to think of new ways to make revising fun. I love using technology and so I used a couple of iphone apps to help him. It meant taking photos of the mandarin character cards and keying in words that he is supposed to learn in the evenings which was a little tedious. But I was really pleased when he happily played the game that I had created. I will share more about the apps in another post.
To be honest, I am generally very relaxed about his school work and I don't help much at all. However, we don't speak mandarin at home and hence, it just doesn't come as naturally to him like english does. So I have been trying to help in small ways.
Thankfully, we started early and it hasn't been too stressful and I can see he has really improved. Goodness, I think my mandarin has improved too!
