The first time I made a fondant animal was for K's 1st birthday. It was a combined birthday celebration for both my sons as they are conveniently born in the same month. J was turning 4 at that time and had decided that he wanted a batman theme while K was too young to have any say. Hence, I chose a bee theme for him. So the theme of the party was the bat and the bee.
I decided to make lemon cupcakes topped with fondant bees and chocolate cupcakes topped with a cave and a bat ring hidden inside. I had purchased these rings from Oriental Trading and thought it would be much easier to use them. The caves were easy enough to make. I added some black icing gel to the fondant and rolled it until i achieved a marbled effect. I then hid the ring inside the cave such that only the bat could be seen.
I also printed cupcake toppers and stuck them on top of each cupcake which made them look more presentable.
For the fondant bee, I found a tutorial online and basically followed the instructions. I won't replicate them here but this tutorial should help if you are looking for one.
So if you have never worked with fondant, don't be afraid to try. Start with something small and do search for tutorials. You can only get better.
p/s i love these old photos of the kids in their dress up. They are almost a little too old for dressing up these days. Our dress up box seems to have been given the cold treatment lately. Do your kids like to play dress up? I think it is great for boosting their imagination.
pp/s Sorry I don't have a fresh DIY idea today. I have been busy working on lots of mother's day ideas and didn't have time to coin a new post today. I hope these you enjoyed looking at these old photos though.
